A vape glossary is a plain-English reference that defines the hardware, e-liquid, coil, and slang terms vapers run into, from atomizer and sub-ohm to nic salt and 510 thread. This is the one to bookmark when a product description or forum thread leaves you guessing.

Vaping has its own vocabulary, and a lot of it gets thrown around with no explanation. Below are 150+ of the terms you'll actually encounter, grouped A to Z, each in a sentence or two. Where a term has its own full guide, we've linked it so you can go deeper. Use the table of contents to jump to a letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important vaping term for a beginner to know?

Resistance, measured in ohms, is the one that ties everything together. It sets how much power your coil pulls, which decides vapor, flavor, and battery safety. Once you understand that lower resistance means more heat and more current, most other hardware terms start to make sense.

What does sub-ohm mean in vaping?

Sub-ohm means a coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohm. These low-resistance coils draw more current, run hotter, and make bigger, warmer clouds than higher-resistance coils. They need a battery rated for the extra current draw, which is why sub-ohm vaping is treated as more advanced.

What is the difference between MTL and DTL vaping?

MTL (mouth-to-lung) means you draw vapor into your mouth first, then inhale it, like a cigarette. DTL (direct-to-lung) means you inhale straight into your lungs for bigger clouds. MTL uses tight airflow and higher nicotine, while DTL uses open airflow and lower nicotine.

What does mg mean on vape juice?

The mg figure is the nicotine strength, in milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of e-liquid. A 3 mg juice is light, 6 mg is moderate, and 50 mg nic salt is strong, the kind used in many pods and disposables. A 0 mg juice contains no nicotine at all.

What is a 510 thread?

510 is the standard screw-on connection between a vape battery and its cartridge or tank. It is named for its rough spec of 10 threads at 0.5 mm, and it is the most common connector in vaping, so most carts and batteries from different brands fit each other.
