A 0.5g cart often gives 100-170 puffs, while a 1g cart often gives 200-330; draw length and power change both estimates.
Those numbers estimate consumption time. They do not describe a disposable vape's battery life or a cartridge's storage life.

The Short Answer by Cart Size
A 0.5g cart contains about 500 milligrams of oil by labeled mass. A 1g cart contains about 1,000 milligrams.
A 2025 National Academies workshop report lists a typical cannabis oil puff at 3-5 mg. It also lists about 130-140 puffs for a 500 mg cartridge (National Academies workshop report, 2025).
Using the broader 3-5 mg range gives this planning table:

The midpoint is useful for planning, not dosing. One puff can use much more or less oil than the midpoint assumes.
How the Puff Estimate Works
The math divides oil mass by estimated oil used per puff.
For a 0.5g cart:
- 500 mg divided by 5 mg per puff equals 100 puffs.
- 500 mg divided by 3 mg per puff equals about 167 puffs.
For a 1g cart:
- 1,000 mg divided by 5 mg per puff equals 200 puffs.
- 1,000 mg divided by 3 mg per puff equals about 333 puffs.
A laboratory study of California cannabis oil cartridges collected 15-31 mg of aerosol over five puffs. That result equals about 3-6.2 mg per machine puff (Meehan-Atrash et al., 2021).
The study also found substantial variation between cartridges and between puffs. Oil viscosity affected how readily cartridges produced aerosol.
These findings support a range instead of one universal puff count. Your battery, cartridge, oil, and draw pattern will not match a laboratory setup exactly.
How Many Days Will a 0.5g or 1g Cart Last?
Divide the estimated puff count by your average puffs per day. Use a puff counter or a written count for several ordinary days.

These are arithmetic estimates. They do not account for unused oil, priming, leakage, or a failed cartridge.

What Changes How Long a Cart Lasts
Cart size is only the starting quantity. The device and user determine how quickly that quantity leaves the chamber.
Puff duration
A long draw keeps the coil powered longer. It usually consumes more oil than a short draw on the same hardware.
Research on medical cannabis oil users found wide differences in puff duration. The small study recorded an average near four seconds, with individual averages from about two to seven seconds (McClure et al., 2023).
Do not compare two users by puff count alone. Ten short draws and ten long draws can consume different amounts.
Voltage and power
Higher voltage can heat a fixed-resistance cartridge more strongly. That can produce more aerosol per second and use oil faster.

High power can also make a cart taste burnt. A scorched wick does not become usable again when the voltage drops.
Oil viscosity and cartridge design
Thicker oil can move toward the intake holes more slowly. Coil material, intake size, airflow, and wick design also affect aerosol output.
The cartridge itself matters as much as its printed capacity. Two 1g carts can produce different puff counts on the same battery.

Leaks and clogs
Leaked oil never reaches the coil as intended. A severe clog can also leave usable oil trapped in a cartridge that no longer draws correctly.
Use the cart unclogging guide for airflow blockage. Stop using a cracked, leaking, or overheating cartridge.
Oil left below the intake holes
A thin coating can remain on the chamber wall or below the intake openings. That visible remainder may not reach the wick.
Do not apply open flame or dismantle a sealed cart to recover residue. Replace the cartridge when it no longer produces vapor normally.
A Better Way to Estimate Your Own Cart
Your past use gives a better estimate than a generic puff number. Track one normal cartridge from start to finish.
- Record the labeled cart size.
- Reset the battery's puff counter, if available.
- Keep the same usual voltage setting.
- Record the final puff count when the cart is functionally empty.
- Divide that count by your average daily puffs.
Do not change your intake to finish this test. The goal is to observe normal consumption, not to reach a target.
A puff counter can miss very short activations. It can also count failed draws or preheat cycles on some batteries.
Repeat the record with the same cartridge family for a stronger estimate. Do not claim the result applies to every brand or oil.
Puff Count Is Not the Same as Oil Dose
A puff counter records activation events. It does not weigh the oil that left the cartridge.
One counted puff can last one second or several seconds. Preheat can also warm oil without appearing as a normal puff on some batteries.
The 0.5g and 1g labels describe oil mass. They do not state the mass of one cannabinoid or the amount absorbed by the user.
Product potency is a separate label value. Do not multiply puff count by a guessed dose to make a medical or impairment decision.
The National Academies report describes major variability in delivered aerosol. It identifies puff behavior, liquid composition, power, and device design as factors.
Use the lifespan range only to plan replacement timing. Follow local product labeling and health guidance for any cannabinoid-related question.
Work an Estimate From Your Own Counter
Suppose a 0.5g cart reached 142 counted puffs before normal output stopped. You used an average of seven puffs per day.
Divide 142 by seven. The observed cart lasted about 20 days.
If you buy the same 1g version, a first estimate is about 40 days. The estimate assumes the same hardware, oil, voltage, and draw pattern.
Do not double the result when the new cartridge uses a different coil or oil. Track the new cart and update the estimate.
A counter reset, missed activation, or failed draw can change the total. Treat the result as a personal planning record.
You can also record the date installed and the date normal output ended. Divide the final puff total by those days for average daily use.
Why the Final Oil Line Can Mislead You
Cartridge intake holes sit above part of the base. Some oil can remain below those openings or coat the chamber wall.
Temperature changes also move the visible oil. Warm oil spreads faster, while cool oil can cling in a thick layer.
Keep the cartridge upright at room temperature for a fair level check. Do not heat it with a flame, oven, or high-power cycle.
If oil remains above the intake holes but vapor stops, check the connection and airflow. Do not keep firing a dry or overheated wick.
Replace the cart when normal low-voltage operation cannot produce vapor and another cart confirms the battery works.
Signs the Cart Is Ending Early
A falling oil level is normal. These signs point to a fault or unusable remainder instead:
- Oil appears around the base, mouthpiece, or battery contact.
- Airflow stops while visible oil remains above the intake holes.
- The battery works with another cart, but this cart produces no vapor.
- The cart becomes unusually hot during normal use.
- The glass or base is cracked or loose.
- The vapor tastes scorched while oil remains.

0.5g Versus 1g for Predictable Use
A 1g cart gives the lower cost per gram in many markets, but price is not part of lifespan math. It also stays attached longer.
A 0.5g cart can suit someone who wants less oil committed to one flavor or cartridge. It can also expose a hardware problem before more oil is trapped.
Choose by expected consumption and verified product quality. Do not assume the larger cart will work with every recessed 510 battery.
