Check Atomizer and No Atomizer mean no usable coil was detected, while Atomizer Short and Atomizer Low report a short or unsafe resistance.

What Each Atomizer Error Means
A regulated mod measures resistance before it supplies normal firing power. Resistance is measured in ohms, shown with the Ω symbol.
The exact message and cutoff depend on the chipset. The device manual owns the final definition for your model.

Vaporesso's XROS Pro 2 manual defines Check Atomizer as no load or high resistance. It defines Short Atomizer as low resistance or a short circuit (Vaporesso, 2025).
SMOK manuals separate the same conditions. No Atomizer means no detected atomizer, while Atomizer Short means the board detected a short (SMOK, 2026).
Check Atomizer and No Atomizer
These messages usually point to an open circuit. The current cannot complete a path through the coil and back to the mod.
The tank can be present while the circuit remains open. A loose coil head, recessed contact, dirty 510 joint, or broken coil can all look absent electrically.
This is why "atomizer" does not mean the entire tank is visibly missing. Our atomizer explainer covers the coil, wick, housing, and contacts as parts.
Common causes
- The tank is not seated on the 510 connector.
- A replaceable coil is loose inside the tank.
- Oil, e-liquid, or dirt coats a contact.
- The 510 center contacts do not meet.
- The coil wire is broken, which creates an open circuit.
- The tank or coil is not compatible with the mod.
For cartridge batteries, use the separate 510 contact guide. It stays focused on cartridge pins and threaded joints.
Atomizer Short
Atomizer Short means the mod detects an unintended low-resistance path. The board stops firing to limit current.
Do not keep pressing the fire button. Repeated attempts do not repair a short and can add heat.
Possible causes include a failed coil, damaged insulator, trapped wire, liquid inside the connector, or physical damage. A rebuildable atomizer can also short when a coil touches its metal chamber.
SMOK lists shorted 510 connectors, low-resistance coils, and shorted tanks among possible causes (SMOK, 2026).

Atomizer Low or Ohms Too Low
Atomizer Low means the measured resistance is below the mod's permitted range. That reading does not always prove a dead short.
A working coil can still be incompatible with a particular device. For example, one mod can support a 0.15-ohm coil while another rejects it.
Compare three values before another test:
- Read the resistance marked on the coil or package.
- Find the supported resistance range in the mod manual.
- Compare the live screen reading with the marked value.
Stop if the screen reading jumps, falls near zero, or differs greatly from the marking. Replace the coil before testing the mod again.
Do not treat an Atomizer Low message as a request to raise wattage. Wattage does not correct an electrical short or an incompatible resistance.

Safe Troubleshooting Order
Stop immediately if the device is wet, damaged, swollen, shorting, or overheating. Do not troubleshoot a device that auto-fires.
1. Read and record the full message
Do not group every atomizer warning together. Check Atomizer and Atomizer Short lead to different first checks.
Record the displayed resistance too. A blank reading, 0.00 Ω, and a low but stable value are different clues.
2. Turn the mod off
Use the normal power control. Let a warm tank and coil cool before removal.
Remove external batteries only when the mod is cool and undamaged. Do not handle a swollen, leaking, or hot cell.
3. Inspect the tank and 510 connection
Look for liquid, damaged threads, a crushed insulator, or a center contact that does not move normally. Do not pry a powered connector with metal.
Wipe accessible contacts with a dry cotton swab. If the manual permits alcohol, use a lightly damp swab and let the parts dry fully.
Vaporesso tells users to keep 510 pins dry and clean. It also recommends checking coil installation and replacing the coil during diagnosis (Vaporesso, 2026).
4. Reseat the coil and tank
For a replaceable-coil tank, confirm the coil is fully installed. Reassemble the tank without cross-threading or excessive force.
Do not reuse a coil with a torn seal, burned insulator, loose wire, or visible damage. Install and prime a new coil when replacement is necessary.
5. Restart and test once
Turn the mod on and watch the resistance reading before firing. Stop if the short warning returns or the reading is unstable.
Do not fire a dry coil. Fill and prime a new coil according to its instructions.
6. Cross-test with known-good compatible parts
Test a known-good tank on the suspect mod. Then test the suspect tank on a known-good compatible mod.
Do not cross-test any hot, wet, damaged, or shorted part. Never use a mechanical mod for this diagnosis.

Stop using the mod if two known-good atomizers fail. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified retailer.
Use the Resistance Reading as a Clue
The displayed resistance can narrow the fault before you fire. Watch the reading after installation while the device remains idle.
Blank, dashes, or a very high reading
This pattern usually supports an open circuit. Check coil seating, tank assembly, and the dry 510 contacts.
A broken coil wire can also give an open reading. Replace a sealed or replaceable coil that stays open on compatible hardware.
A reading near zero
A value near 0.00 Ω can support a short-circuit diagnosis. Turn the mod off and remove the atomizer after it cools.
Do not keep firing to see whether the number rises. Replace the suspect coil and inspect its insulator before any cross-test.
A stable value below the mod limit
The coil can be electrically intact but incompatible. Compare its marked resistance with the mod's supported range.
Use another regulated device only when that device explicitly supports the coil. Do not use a mechanical mod as a test tool.
A reading that jumps when the tank moves
An unstable value can point to a loose coil, damaged 510 joint, broken wire, or worn connector. Movement should not change a sound connection greatly.
Stop using parts with intermittent contact. Arcing at a poor joint can create heat and surface damage.
Temperature changes can shift a coil's resistance slightly. Large jumps or repeated error changes are not ordinary temperature drift.
Decide Whether to Replace the Coil, Tank, or Mod
Replace the coil first when one coil fails and the tank passes with another compatible coil. This is the smallest replaceable electrical load.
Replace or service the tank when several coils fail only in that tank. Inspect its base, positive pin, and insulating material for damage.
Stop using the mod when two known-good tanks fail on it. A recessed connector, liquid-damaged board, or internal wiring fault needs qualified service.
Do not move a suspect tank onto another device if it is shorted, leaking, cracked, or hot. Cross-testing is for safe, intact parts only.
Keep packaging until diagnosis is complete. The printed resistance and batch information can help a retailer or manufacturer review a defective coil.
What Not to Do
Shortcuts can damage the connector or defeat the protection that stopped firing.
- Do not keep firing through Atomizer Short.
- Do not bridge contacts with foil, wire, or another conductor.
- Do not remove or bypass a connector insulator.
- Do not install a coil below the supported resistance range.
- Do not pry a live 510 pin with metal.
- Do not use a wet tank or mod.
- Do not open a device with a built-in battery.

Why the Kodo Pro Needs Its Own Guide
The Yocan Kodo Pro uses a 510 oil cartridge, not a generic sub-ohm tank. Its common fixes involve the cartridge base and Kodo contact.
Yocan says the No Atomizer message is usually a connection problem. Its official steps include cleaning contacts, changing the cartridge, and avoiding overtightening (Yocan, 2025).
