Follow the torch manual for use and storage, and retire any leaking, damaged, malfunctioning, or recalled unit.
Butane is a flammable gas stored under pressure. The torch also stays hot after its visible flame is gone.

Start With the Exact Torch Manual
Controls that look similar can work differently. One torch may require a safety lock, while another adds a continuous-flame switch.
Find the model number on the body or packaging. Confirm the correct fuel, fill direction, wait time, operating limit, storage limit, and shutdown steps.
Do not copy a refill procedure from an unrelated model. Do not modify a lock, valve, regulator, nozzle, or factory setting.
The MagTorch MT16 manual warns against modifying factory parts. It also says never to use a torch that leaks, is damaged, or malfunctions (MagTorch manual, 2026).
Before using any older or unfamiliar torch, search the model in the CPSC recall database. In July 2026, CPSC recalled specified Jobon butane torch lighters because they lacked required child-resistant mechanisms (CPSC recall, 2026).
A safety lock alone does not prove a model is compliant. CPSC also recalled certain Sondiko torches in 2025 for missing the required mechanism (CPSC, 2025).
Pre-Use Safety Check
Inspect a cool, unlit torch in a well-ventilated area. Keep it away from smoking, flames, sparks, and hot surfaces.

Listen for unexpected hissing. A gas odor, cold wetness near the valve, or unexplained fuel loss can indicate a leak.
Do not press the igniter to investigate. Do not use another flame as a leak detector.
The Bernzomatic ST2200/ST2250KC/MT780 manual says to listen for leaks before each use and after refilling. It requires a well-ventilated, spark-free area without open flames (Bernzomatic manual, accessed 2026).
Prepare the Work Area
Clear more space than the banger occupies. The visible blue flame does not show every hot zone around the nozzle.
- Use a stable, level, noncombustible surface.
- Remove paper, towels, alcohol, fuel, aerosols, and loose clothing.
- Keep the refill can away from the operating area.
- Tie back long hair and secure loose sleeves.
- Keep children, pets, and bystanders away.
- Maintain ventilation without a strong crosswind.
- Know where the torch can cool without tipping.
- Keep appropriate fire-safety equipment accessible.
Alcohol used for dab rig cleaning is flammable. Close its container and remove it before bringing out a torch.
Place the rig where the flame never crosses a hose, cable, shelf, wall covering, or person. Confirm nearby glass is stable before ignition.

Refill Without Guessing
The model manual controls the refill. The following sequence identifies safety gates, not universal valve instructions.
- Move to a well-ventilated area away from people.
- Remove every flame, spark, lit product, and hot surface.
- Confirm the torch is extinguished and cool to room temperature.
- Set the gas control and flame lock as the manual directs.
- Verify the refill fuel matches the torch specification.
- Orient the torch and can exactly as illustrated.
- Stop at the manual's fill limit or overflow signal.
- Move the fuel can away and close its cap.
- Check for hissing, wet fuel, or gas odor without igniting.
- Wait the full time stated in the manual before testing the torch.
The MagTorch manual requires butane, a cool extinguished torch, ventilation, and no ignition sources. It specifies a three-minute wait for that model.
Bernzomatic gives the same safety gates for its ST200 and ST250. Its manual also says to stop when fuel begins to overflow.
Those timings belong to those products. Use the longer period when your own manual specifies one.
Never refill a warm torch beside a recently heated banger. Do not refill over a sink or container where released gas could collect.
Safe Lighting and Operation
Set the initial flame control according to the manual before ignition. Point the nozzle away from faces, hands, clothing, and combustible objects.
- Place the torch upright on its stable base.
- Confirm the banger and rig cannot tip.
- Release the safety lock and ignite only as the manual directs.
- Verify a stable flame before approaching the banger.
- Keep the torch in your hand while it is lit.
- Aim only at the intended quartz surface.
- Keep the flame away from joints, seals, tables, and walls.
- Release any continuous-flame lock before setting the torch down.
- Shut off the gas control completely after heating.
- Visually confirm the flame is out.
Never leave a lit torch unattended. Never point it toward someone, even when it appears unlit.
Bright sunlight can hide a flame, and wind can redirect heat. MagTorch cautions about both conditions and recommends a level resting surface.

Shutdown and Cool-Down
The metal nozzle remains hot after the flame disappears. Treat it as hot until the manual's cool-down is complete.
- Close the gas control fully.
- Release and disable any flame lock.
- Confirm there is no visible flame or gas sound.
- Place the torch upright on its designated base.
- Keep the nozzle aimed into clear space.
- Leave the torch attended while it cools.
- Do not touch, cap, refill, clean, or store a warm nozzle.
The Bernzomatic manual requires complete extinguishment and full cooling before storage. MagTorch also says to lock its nozzle cover only after operation ends.
Let the banger cool independently. Do not use the torch body as a rest for a hot terp-pearl setup or carb cap.
Safe Storage
Store the torch only when it is fully cool and extinguished. Engage the model's storage lock and keep it upright where it cannot fall.
Choose a ventilated location away from children, direct sun, vehicles, heaters, flames, sparks, and anything combustible. Keep fuel cans capped and separate from the work surface.
Both cited manufacturer manuals prohibit exposure above 120°F, or 49°C. Follow a lower limit when the torch or fuel label provides one.
Keep butane equipment out of hot vehicles. Do not pierce, crush, burn, or casually discard a pressurized tank.
Under current U.S. passenger-aircraft rules, torch, blue-flame, and jet-flame lighters are prohibited in both the cabin and checked baggage. Check the current FAA and carrier rules before travel (FAA PackSafe, updated 2026).
Retire the Torch When Safety Changes
Cleaning cannot correct tank, valve, lock, or ignition damage. A torch is not a repair project for the user.

Do not sell, donate, or give away a recalled torch. The 2026 Jobon notice tells owners not to transfer the hazardous product.
Disposal rules vary because the tank may retain pressurized fuel. Contact the manufacturer, local household hazardous-waste program, or recall administrator for instructions.
Keep Torch Safety Separate From Dab Technique
